Area Police
Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
An important representative said the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
