The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following a period of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
The President
