On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
